# Multilingual SEO

- **Definition:** Multilingual SEO is the search engine optimisation approach that ensures each language version of a site appears to the right audience at the right address.

Definition

## What is multilingual SEO?

When a site launches in a second language, a search engine has to answer two questions correctly: does it know these pages are translations of each other, and which version should it show to which user? Multilingual SEO settles those questions with technical signals and content decisions.

On the technical side, hreflang annotations, a self-referencing canonical for each language version and a consistent URL structure matter most. On the content side, translation alone is not enough: each language has its own search habits, terms and questions. A well-built setup keeps the same [information architecture](https://globalmeta.net/en/glossary/information-architecture) logic in every language and generates [structured data](https://globalmeta.net/en/glossary/structured-data) per language too.

Components

## What are its core components?

- **Hreflang:** Each page reciprocally pointing to its other language versions, with x-default defined for the fallback version.
- **Canonical:** Each language version declaring itself as canonical; one language is never canonicalised to another.
- **URL structure:** Choosing subfolders, subdomains or country-code domains and applying that choice consistently.
- **Localised content:** Titles, descriptions and copy written for the search intent in that language.
- **Language switcher and internal links:** Letting users and crawlers reach the equivalent page directly.

Example

## What does it look like in practice?

globalmeta.net uses this structure: Turkish pages sit at the root and English pages under /en/. The Turkish equivalent of this page is at /sozluk/cok-dilli-seo. Both pages point to each other with hreflang, declare their own address as canonical and set the Turkish version as x-default. The language link in the page's top navigation also goes straight to the equivalent page.

A common mistake is to canonicalise every language version to the main language, or to send the language switcher to the homepage only. The search engine may then treat pages in the second language as duplicates, and no visibility builds up in that language.

Measurement and practice

## How is it audited?

A technical audit comes first: every page is checked for reciprocal hreflang pairs, missing return links, incorrect language codes and canonical conflicts. Crawling tools and the indexing reports in Search Console bring these errors to the surface.

Performance is then tracked separately for each language: the indexing rate of each version, impressions and clicks from target countries, and visibility for keywords in that language. If traffic in one language is unexpectedly low compared with the other, the problem usually lies in content parity or in the hreflang setup.

Difference

## How does it differ from international SEO?

Multilingual SEO focuses on language: it manages versions of the same content in different languages. International SEO also targets countries and regions, covering decisions such as separate versions for markets that share a language, currency, local addresses and regional hreflang codes. A corporate site offered in Turkish and English is managed with multilingual SEO, whereas a shop with separate pricing pages for the UK and the US needs international SEO. Both should be planned from the start in the [digital ecosystem](https://globalmeta.net/en/services/digital-ecosystems) architecture.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is machine translation enough for multilingual SEO?**

Usually not. Machine translation can speed up the start, but editorial review is needed so that terms and search intent suit the language. Search engines may treat automated content that adds no value for users as low quality.

**What does x-default do?**

x-default specifies the page to show when no version matches the user's language or region. It is usually set to the main language version or to a language selection page.

**Does every page need an equivalent in every language?**

No. For pages without an equivalent, hreflang is defined only for the versions that exist. What matters is that pages with equivalents are paired correctly and that the language switcher never points to an address that does not exist.
