# Performance Marketing

- **Definition:** Performance marketing is a marketing approach that plans, measures and optimises advertising spend against measurable business outcomes such as sales, qualified leads and profit, rather than clicks or impressions.

Definition

## What is performance marketing?

In performance marketing, every unit of spend is tied to an outcome and that outcome is measured. Campaigns on platforms such as Google, Meta, LinkedIn or TikTok are continually adjusted according to how many sales or qualified leads they deliver when reaching a given audience with a given message and budget.

A common misconception is to treat performance marketing as ad account management. In reality, the result depends as much on the strength of the offer, the landing page experience, the accuracy of measurement and whether incoming demand turns into sales as on the settings inside the account. Performance marketing is therefore a system that works together with the [data layer](https://globalmeta.net/en/glossary/data-layer), the [attribution model](https://globalmeta.net/en/glossary/attribution-model) and [conversion rate optimisation](https://globalmeta.net/en/glossary/conversion-rate-optimization).

Components

## What are its core components?

- **Measurement infrastructure:** Recording conversions, revenue and lead quality accurately and with consent.
- **Offer and landing page:** The page and offer that deliver on the ad's promise and move the user to act.
- **Channel and campaign architecture:** Which platform plays which role; the balance between creating and capturing demand.
- **Creative testing system:** Testing message, visual and format hypotheses in a planned way.
- **Budget and profitability rules:** The economic framework that decides at which threshold a campaign is scaled up or paused.

Example

## What does it look like in practice?

Consider a software company collecting demo requests. Campaigns bring in plenty of form submissions at what looks like a low cost per lead, but the sales team says most enquiries fall outside the target audience. Looking only at the ad account, everything seems fine.

A performance marketing approach first redefines the valuable conversion: not a form submission, but an enquiry the sales team judges to be qualified. That information is sent back from the CRM to the advertising platforms, the landing page is rewritten to make the target audience clear and campaigns are optimised against the new signal. Form volume may fall, but the share of enquiries that turn into sales rises and the budget goes to the right place.

Measurement and practice

## Which metrics measure it?

The core metrics are cost per acquisition (CPA), return on ad spend ([ROAS](https://globalmeta.net/en/glossary/roas)), customer acquisition cost (CAC) and customer lifetime value (LTV). The ratio of total revenue to total marketing spend (MER) is used to balance out overlapping channel reports. For lead-generating businesses, the qualified lead rate and the lead-to-sale conversion rate are added.

No metric is enough on its own. A high click-through rate can bring low-quality traffic, and a high ROAS can come from unprofitable products. Metrics should be read alongside profitability and sales feedback, on a weekly optimisation rhythm.

Difference

## How does it differ from brand marketing?

Brand marketing aims to increase a brand's awareness and preference over the long term; its effect shows over months and years, often indirectly. Performance marketing focuses on measurable actions in the short term. They are not rivals: a strong brand raises the conversion rate of advertising, and performance data shows which messages work. A healthy budget plans both together. ## Frequently asked questions

**Is performance marketing just ad management?**

No. Ad management is one part of performance marketing. The offer, the landing page, the measurement infrastructure and the conversion of incoming demand into sales are all part of the same system and are optimised together.

**Are performance marketing and digital marketing the same thing?**

No. Digital marketing is a broad field covering every digital channel, including content, social media, email, SEO and advertising. Performance marketing is the part of that field where spend is tied to measurable outcomes and continuously optimised.

**When do performance marketing results appear?**

Initial data arrives quickly once campaigns go live, but platform learning phases and meaningful test results usually take a few weeks. Profitable scaling becomes possible once the measurement, offer and creative system is in place.
