Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)
- Definition
- Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the discipline of optimising content so that it is selected as the source for direct answers in search engines and AI assistants.
Definition
What is AEO?
People now resolve many questions by looking at a direct answer rather than a list of links. Google's featured snippets and AI Overviews, voice assistants, and systems such as ChatGPT and Perplexity respond to a question with a single answer and show the sources it relies on. AEO is the work of making your content one of those sources.
To get there, content should ask the question plainly, answer it in the first sentence and expand on the detail afterwards. The page also needs to be technically crawlable, supported by structured data and backed by consistent organisation details. AEO, together with its close relative GEO, is best seen as a layer on top of traditional SEO.
Components
What are its core components?
- Question-led content: The questions people actually ask become headings, and each receives a short, clear answer.
- Answer-first structure: The definition or conclusion comes in the first sentence; context, examples and exceptions follow.
- Structured data: The page type, subject and organisation details are marked up explicitly with schema.org.
- Crawlability: Search and AI crawlers can reach the content, and robots.txt decisions are made deliberately.
- Machine-friendly versions: Resources that present content plainly, such as an llms.txt file and Markdown versions of pages.
Example
What does it look like in practice?
If the question "how long does this service take?" is buried in the middle of a long paragraph on an FAQ page, answer engines struggle to find it. In AEO work the question becomes its own heading, the first sentence gives the direct answer and the conditions that affect the timeline follow. The same question and answer are also described with FAQPage markup.
globalmeta.net applies this logic across the site: every term in this glossary opens with a quotable definition, every page has a Markdown version, and an llms.txt file summarising the site is published. llms.txt is a format proposed in 2024 and not yet an official standard; there is no guarantee every system reads it, but adding one costs little.
Measurement and practice
How is AEO measured?
Measuring AEO differs from traditional rank tracking. The first step is to list the questions the brand wants to answer and to ask them at regular intervals on surfaces such as Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Whether the brand is cited as a source, which page is quoted and whether the answer is accurate are all recorded.
In analytics, referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar sources is tracked as a separate channel. In Search Console, featured snippets and impressions for question-style queries are monitored. Because Google does not report clicks from AI Overviews separately, these data points need to be interpreted together.
Difference
How does AEO differ from SEO?
SEO aims to get a page ranked highly in search results and clicked; AEO aims for the content to be the answer itself, or its source. SEO success is measured by rankings and traffic, while in AEO citations, answer accuracy and the brand being mentioned within the answer become important. The two are not alternatives, though: a page that cannot be crawled, indexed or trusted cannot be an answer source either. That is why AEO is handled together with the SEO foundation in our digital ecosystems and AI-native system design work.
Frequently asked questions
01Are AEO and GEO the same thing?
They overlap heavily but differ in emphasis. AEO focuses on being the source of a direct answer to a question; GEO focuses on the brand being accurately mentioned and cited in the answers that generative AI systems such as ChatGPT or Perplexity synthesise from multiple sources.
02Is an llms.txt file required for AEO?
No. llms.txt is a proposed format for giving AI systems a summary of a site and is not an official standard. The core requirement is still crawlable, clear and trustworthy content; llms.txt is a low-cost addition that complements it.
03How long does AEO take to show results?
It depends on the site's existing authority, how often content is refreshed and which questions are targeted. New, question-led and well-structured content can start to appear once it has been recrawled, which is why measurement should be set up from day one.
